The last few weeks

June 11, 2006

We have been busy! The week before Memorial Day, we took a family trip to Memphis for Uncle Brian's medical school graduation. The boys loved spending time with Aunt Amanda, Uncle Brian, Uncle Jamie, Grandma and Grandpa Brewer, and old friends from Memphis. Will especially loved meeting Uncle Jamie for the first time.

This was Will's first road trip, and he travelled fabulously, despite coming down with a sinus infection toward the end of the trip. Christopher had a great time, especially when playing in the hotel swimming pool and "jumping" off the side into Mommy or Daddy's arms.

Uncle Brian brainwashed him briefly, and Christopher got a little confused about which colors we cheer for in our family . . .

Fortunately, we got him straightened out quickly!

When we returned from Memphis, we enjoyed a visit from Mommy's friend Jenny.  It was especially helpful to have her around, since Daddy was in Chicago that week for a boards review course.

Some other random updates . . .

As Will does more and more cooing and vocalizing, we often ask Christopher to translate for us, since we figure he might remember some baby language. It is fascinating what he comes up with–sometimes Will talks about Jesus, about pizza, about airplanes, or even about drawings of violins! Christopher continues to be an adoring big brother and constantly wants to "go see Will", hug and kiss him, and lay on the playmat with him, imitating Will's kicking feet.

Christopher has started showing interests in subjects other than musical instruments, which is a nice change of pace. One of his newest games is to "cook" for us, running into the other room and returning with imaginary grilled cheese, hot dogs, fruit, pizza, etc. He is also obsessed with boo-boo's–if he has them, if we have them, if random strangers we see have them (a little embarrassing!). Noel has taught him that if someone has a mole, it is not a boo-boo and doesn't hurt, and so his reaction to anything resembling a mole is a shrug of the shoulders and "Ah, just a mole!"  He also talks a lot about airplanes and airports, especially about Uncle Jamie and Miss Jenny being at the airport, since they are the two people who, as far as he knows, were last seen on their way to the airport.  :)   For the last few days, he has a toy dog that has been flying his toy airplaine to Utah, where Aunt Amanda and Uncle Brian just moved.

Christopher and Mommy have had some entertaining conversations lately. Here is a sampling–remember that Oh-shoe is Christopher's name for himself.

Talking about worship . . .

Mommy: What is worship about?

Christopher: About Jesus.

Mommy: (Trying to have a theological lesson) Who is Jesus? Jesus is God's Son.

Christopher: Yeah . . . Sun is very hot. Oh-shoe need a hat.

In the pediatrician's office, we hear a child crying from another rom . . .

Christopher: Someone's sad.

Mommy: I wonder why they are sad.

Christopher: Oh-shoe push them. (This is egocentrism at its best, and also Christopher remembering our talks about him pushing other children and making them cry.)

Will seems to be teething, although we haven't seen any actual teeth yet. He is a drooling mess and always has at least two fingers in his mouth. He adores the blue elephant that hangs from his car seat (thank you, Aunt Laura and Uncle Garland!), and lately has started grabbing it and gnawing on one of its feet.  This is Will with the elephant prior to its victimization:

We had been a little concerned at Will's 4 month check-up, because he hadn't grown in length and only gained about 6 ounces in a month.  We took him for a weight check on Friday, and we were pleased that he gained 10 ounces and more than an inch, which was excellent.  The nurse couldn't believe the length measurement was right at first!  Praise God for this answer to prayer and reassurance that he is a healthy baby.  He continues to be such a happy boy–even when teething, this seems to be his usual state:
